That squashed shape is real — the atmosphere lifts the sun's bottom edge harder than its top.
PHYSICS WORTH SHARING
Here's the trick the sky pulls every evening.
Air gets denser closer to the ground, and light bends when it passes from thinner stuff into thicker stuff. Sunset light comes in sideways — skimming through hundreds of miles of thickening air — so it curves gently downward. Your brain doesn't do curves. It assumes light travels straight, traces the rays back, and places the sun higher than it actually is.
At the horizon, that lift is about 34 arcminutes. The sun's entire disk is about 32. Read that again: the bending is bigger than the sun.
So at the moment the sun appears to touch the horizon, the real sun — all of it — is already below it. The atmosphere is bending its image over the curve of the Earth for you. It's why sunset runs minutes past what geometry allows, why sunrise starts early, and why the low sun looks squashed: the bottom edge gets lifted harder than the top, flattening the disk.
The 10-Second Version: At the horizon, the atmosphere bends sunlight by slightly more than the sun's own width — so every sun you've ever watched touch the horizon was already below it.

"Replay" means displaced, not delayed — the photons still made their 8-minute trip from the sun. The atmosphere bends their path, so the image sits higher than the source; nothing about the timing changes. And 34 arcminutes is a sea-level average: refraction swings with temperature and pressure, which is why sunset predictions are only good to a minute or so, and why unusual air layers can serve up a strange-looking sun.

Set: Drop a coin in a mug. Have students step back until the rim just hides it.
Ask: "Can I make the coin reappear without anyone moving?" Collect theories.
Pour water in slowly.
Reveal: the coin slides back into view — light from it bends where water meets air, so they just saw around the rim.
Land it: Earth's atmosphere does the same thing with sunlight. Same physics, bigger mug — that's how you watch a sun that already set.
